Since ancient times, sheep have provided food, shelter and clothing to people around the world. Since then, scientific advances have brought us many synthetic alternatives. But nothing has been able to come close to the warmth, durability, and sheer practicality of nature’s very own sheep wool. Today, sheep give the world some three million tonnes - that’s more than 6 billion pounds - of raw wool each year. This is processed into one million tonnes of clothing and textiles and one-half million tonnes of carpets. While nothing in this world is completely non-allergenic, wool comes close. Many people have experienced a noticeable relief from allergic reaction after switching from feathers or down to wool. The simple reason is that wool will not sustain the survival of allergy-creating dust and microbes. Fortunately, wool repels rain, yet absorbs moisture. In fact, wool can absorb up to 1/3 of its own weight in moisture without feeling damp. As such wool will draw moisture away from the body, keeping a layer of insulating dry air next to the skin. This helps to keep a person cool in summer and warm in winter. Wool is also safely flame resistant. It will not melt nor sustain a flame without an external source of fuel. |
